The mysterious Beethoven Funeral March No 3
Among the marches played by the Band of the Royal Marines - Portsmouth at Baroness Thatcher's funeral, were Beethoven Funeral Marches Nos 1,2, and 3.
The No 1 march is actually composed by Johann H Walch but has been attributed
to Beethoven as WoO Anhang 13.
The No 2 march is the 3rd Mvt of Beethoven's Piano Sonata No 12.
The other marches listed were:
Mendelssohn Funeral March: Songs Without Words Op 62 No 3
Chopin Funeral March : 3rd Mvt Piano Sonata No 2 Op 35
Although I wasn't able to view the entire procession, I have seen sufficient clips to
identify all the above pieces. I think I may also have heard a snatch of Handel's
Dead March from Saul.
My question is can anyone identify the mysterious Beethoven No 3 ?
Even the RM Band Facebook page just says "No 3". Some consider
the 2nd Mvt from Beethoven's Symphony No 3 "eroica" as an additional
Beethoven funeral march. Alas I didn't hear it on the videos.
The question of the No 3 Beethoven has come up on an online forum, but no
solution was forthcoming.
Identifying a Thai Royal funeral march was a snap compared to this.
